3 out of 5 stars R&R Hall Of Famer .... And About Time   September 30, 2007
When I saw that Percy Sledge had been inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame in 2005, my first thought was "how do these people arrive at their often lame decisions?" I mean, the man's last hit came in 1974 - 31 years before he was honoured - so are they telling us that the impact of those 14 Billboard Pop Hot 100/13 R&B hits for Atlantic (one on Capricorn), along with his albums and personal appearance work, were somehow viewed differently in 2005 than in, say, 1996 when they were busy inducting the likes of The Velvet Underground?

As for this album from Atlantic, it's not quite "ultimate" in that it does not provide Any Day Now (# 35 R&B/# 86 Hot 100 in April 1969) nor Sunshine (# 89 R&B with Sister Sledge in August 1973). This in a 20-track release that contains seven tracks (7, 8, 12, 14, 18, 19 and 20 - over a third) that were not hits for Percy, and one that was an uncharted B-side (It's All Wrong But It's Alright which backed Take Time To Know Her (# 6 R&B/# 11 Hot 100 in early 1968). Now, I know some will criticize me for harping on hits, but this is, after all, labeled "The Ultimate Collection" and it seems to me that, if they wished to limit the tracks to 20, two of those non-hits could have been dropped in favour of the missing ones.

Or, on the other hand, go to 28 to 30 tracks, as is the case with most of the great releases from Ace of London, Jasmine, and Bear Family, and provide more B-sides, along with some background notes and discography, both of which are missing here.

The sound quality is decent enough, but all in all, this is not much better than a 3-star release when compared to others available.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS - THE BEST LOVE SONGS OF ALL TIME   September 16, 1999
Percy was a fabulous artist. I "feel" his music everytime I play it. His music talks directly about life......... how it can be full of love, pain, or both. No one will ever be able to replace his music.
