| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description While some may remember him as the lead guitarist in the funkiest band in the land, The Time, many remember Jesse Johnson as the cofident sexy cool solo artist of the '80s. This collection features the lead single "Be Your Man" (No. 4 R&B), Crazay (a duet with Sly Stone), which went to No. 2 on the R&B charts and the funky b-side gem "Free World." Jesse was kind enough to add some new flavor to the collection by providing a brand new never before heard song simply called, "Vibe."

Ultimate Collection is Aptly Named April 9, 2008 Purchase of this Ultimate Collection is definitely not a waste of money. I am always disappointed when an album claims to be a greatest hits and it is missing a hit song or it is an edited version and not the full length version. That it is not the case with this collection. They are all present and accounted for in their full length glory. So be ready to enjoy the 7 minute long "Free World" or various B-sides that are simply not available any more.
Uh, not so much November 19, 2007 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Maybe I grew up since the 80's, but this is a weak CD. Very little that is listenable at all, let alone something that would go into heavy rotation. I can't believe I ever thought this was cool. One decent cut on the entire album. Uninspired instrumentals and tone deaf singing. Purple Rain??? How about Nurple Pain.
Good stuff June 6, 2007 This is one of my favorite purchases so far. I really enjoy this music.
Straight up funky and slammin'. May 20, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are a big fan of the 80's group "The Time", then you gotta love Jesse Johnson. This is a must have in your collection. If anybody was fortunate enough to come across his first album on cd, that's a good thing. But, if not, then you can pretty much settle for this greatest hits collection because all of the slammin' songs are pretty much on here. This cd definitely took me back in time.
A Vastly Underrated Musician March 19, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I remember when Jesse Johnson made his debut as a solo artist. At the time, I was just a kid so I never even knew he was a member of the band The Time (one of my all time favorite bands). My first introduction to him was through the song and video, "I Want My Girl". For some reason, this song struck a cord with me and has stuck with me all these years. I'm not sure why Jesse Johnson never became a "major star"-he should have been-maybe he was a victim of the times or maybe a victim of A&M records. Either way, Jesse Johnson is one of the most underrated and underappreciated guitar players with which I am aquainted. In my opinion, he is one of the best. Unfortunately, for whatever reason-possibly because he was constantly being compared to Prince, his guitar skills have often been overlooked. Although I love his music from the past it pales in comparison to the music he does now. But Jesse Johnson proved that he could be more than just The Time's guitarist and the oft-said "Prince Protege". He could write, produce, arrange, engineer and play multiple instruments. In some ways I wish he would have done the music that he really wanted to do-blues and rock-but given the musical landscape of the time I'm sure the execs wanted formulaic Prince sounding albums so he obliged them. I am happy that he allowed the release of this compilation because it allows his fans (folks like me) to be reintroduced and reacquainted with Mr. Johnson's work. This collection includes his hits like the aforementioned "I Want My Girl", "Can You Help Me", "Be Your Man", "Crazay" (with the legendary Sly Stone), "Black In America" (a song that also stuck with me), "Love Struck", and "Baby Let's Kiss". It even includes a previously unreleased track "Vibe" which is very sexy and it has become one of my new favorites. I would have preferred if they would have included "Do Yourself A Favor", "Drive Yo Cadillac", some extended mixes and some tracks from his 1996 release Bare My Naked Soul which is his best work at the time of this writing. But I'm just happy that someone thought enough to compile a collection of his work-so I can overlook what's missing and appreciate what's here.
