As Al Jackson laid down the beat in soulsville , he made everlasing hits as the drummer with Booker T & The MG's . As did ; Johnnie Taylor , Rufus Thomas , Sam & Dave , Isaac Hayes , William Bell , Judy Clay , Jimmy Hughes , Little Milton , Albert King , Eddie Floyd , David Porter , The Bar Kays , Mel & Tim , The Soul Children , The Mad Lads , The Temprees , The Staple Singers , Carla Thomas , Otis Redding , The Rance Allen Group , Hot Sauce , The Emotions , The Dramatics , Jean Knight , Frederick Knight , Margie Joseph , Fat Larry's Band , The Sweet Inspirations . The Beat Goes On !!

4 out of 5 stars A closet-cleaning, but a damn good one   October 31, 2004

This twofer is a typical '70s closet cleaning, but contains most of the good songs Taylor cut for Stax, before he left for Malaco (in Stax's demise) and all their drum machines. Contains much of his macho posturing tunes like the "Jody" series, but also some of his light political work, like "I Am Somebody." If you're looking for a singer who reminds you of that guy at the other end of the bar, Taylor's your man. Since it's doubtful he'll get a career-wide retrospective that will tie together the gritty Stax work, the Columbia disco years and the Malaco mildness, one can settle for this and a copy of Disco 9000.
