Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pairing of Lou and Jean!   January 8, 2006
This was a creatively done collection for the bargain price it was! I got it just for Let Me Be Good To You, perhaps Lou Rawls' funkiest song to date. You'll Never Find (which isn't on here), one of his most famous songs, is more on the mellow side. The percussion and band have such rollicking grooves and rhythms on there! But Lou's smooth voice is just fabulous on that song and the other four songs here. Much has been talked about his early blues and jazz hits, but Lou's late-'70s period had such wonderfully crafted records with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, masters of the Philly sound. While I hated to see Lou leave Philadelphia International Records in the early '80s, he still continued to make exciting music. Jean Carn made some superb songs, sort of the Jill Scott of her time, and her songs are strongly represented here. I still love the funky Don't Let It Go To Your Head. The other songs are such good Philly soul music under her soaring vocals. A smartly done collection of 10 songs.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Philly Soul with touches of Jazz.   September 8, 2005
Both Lou Rawls and Jean Carn were the most sophisticated and classiest vocalists to record for Philadelphia International Records. Because they both have deep vocal roots in jazz, they brought anew level of elegance and sophistication to Philly Soul. This nice compilation can't be considered definitive in anty way but it does a decent job at spotlighting both artists' vocal talents. For a deeper and greater appreciation of Ms. Carn's work I strongly suggest your buying the CD "Closer Than Close: The Best of Jean Carn",however. As for Mr. Rawls, his "All Things In Time", "When You Hear Lou, You've Heard It All" and "Unmistakably Lou" CDs are truly essential albums which are also his all-time best.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Budget Collection   November 10, 2004
This Budget CD with 5 tracks apiece from Lou Rawls & Jean Carn shows the jazzier side of the Philadelphia Sound. The tracks from Rawls are enjoyable & include the hits "Lady Love" & "See You When I Get There." He also does a nice take on Paul Davis' "I Go Crazy."

Jean Carn is one of those underrated divas whose music deserves to be heard. This is a good way to get introduced to her without spending a lot of money. While all of her tracks are nice, the upbeat "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" is my favorite. She also does a fun, upbeat duet number with a male singer (not sure who) called "Sweet & Wonderful".

I can't believe the prices people are asking for some of Ms. Carn's other albums. Anyway, as I said, start here & then maybe look for a Greatest Hits Collection. Good stuff!
