An Overdose of Joy November 26, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first Ian Levine production I have bought in many years and I had forgotten just how good he is. His exquisite melodies warrant repeated listenings. I must have listened to this 10 times and am still mining the riches therein. Glorious, and from a grossly under-valued producer.
24 Brandnew Songs - But Sounding Like 24 Classics! September 18, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For those who prefer the joyous, vibrant, danceable beat of a classic Motown record to the plastic pop on today's charts, here's what you've been looking for. 24 brand new songs ... but sounding like 24 classics instead. Are there really singers who sing like this today? Yes there are. With a producer of Ian Levine's calibre to guide the vocal, yes indeed there are!!! Listen to Angelo Starr (the brother of the late Edwin Starr) on the glorious opening track "Stand On My Own Two Feet", listen to the powerful vocal by Vanessa Haynes on the stomping "Leaving the Scene of the Crime", listen to the sultry Ebony Alleyne on "Mister Magic Man" and her duet with Noel McCoy "Special Delivery" (equalling a Marvin Gaye / Tammi Terrell duet). You get swinging fingersnapping titles like "Headaches and Heartaches" (Gerod Harris), "Trust My Heart" (Leee John), and a dramatic highlight is the outstanding "Back to Basics" by Paul Esmond Hazell. The Flirtations - a girl group who's been around for a stunning 43 years - sound as good as ever on "Resist the Temptation" as does one of the group member Pearly Gates on her own "For Crying Out Loud". Two legendary Hi-NRG divas Earlene Bentley and Carol Jiani make a magnificent return to record with "Water Under The Bridge" and "Work My Fingers To The Bone" - and finally, "Like a Lady" by the mighty Voices With Soul (from X-Factor) is being premiered here, arguably being more disco than Northern Soul, but what the heck - it's a KILLER track on a killer compilation. And - here's the real bargain - all 24 songs + 3 bonus tracks are featured on the free accompanying video with all the artists! This is the first release on Ian Levine's new label Center City Records - and with a debut this fine, let's hope the first of many! While I'm at it, do check out the new Ebony Alleyne album "Never Look Back". After 32 years in the business, Ian Levine has never been better.
