Looking for more... September 15, 2008 There are only a couple of good songs out of 10... Should have paid more attention to the description. I would be happy if there were even more volumes of this available.
It was a lame year September 28, 2007 I bought this CD for nostalgia reasons but half the stuff on here I don't even remember hearing and what I did hear I didn't like on the first go round. Exceptions are "Come and Get Your Love" and "Sweet Home Alabama". "Bonnie and the Jets" is okay but not something I want to listen too over and over. 1974 was a great time for drugs...hence the success of the rest of these "hits".
These awesome songs bring back fond memories; but sheesh, they could have picked more than just ten songs !!! August 26, 2006 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This CD is an excellent, although somewhat limited, selection of great rock and roll hits from 1974. The CD starts off strong--real strong--with a live recording of Elton John slammin' out "Bennie And The Jets." Awesome! The crowd is clapping along and just loving it. This electric start whets your appetite for more--and that's exactly what you're going to get!
The CD continues with the next track, "The Loco-Motion." I remember when this came out. It sounded so much to me at the time like a song from the `50s. And, in a way, it was. But the song had been revved up for that `70s rock and roll flavor. We played this 45 rpm record so much that we wore the grooves completely off the vinyl! SMILES Billy Preston also contributes "Nothing From Nothing," which has a slightly jaded but truthful message about a romance that just can't be.
Other great songs on the CD include "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd; "Dancing Machine" by the Jackson 5; "The Joker" by The Steve Miller Band and "Come And Get Your Love" by Redbone. NOW THAT'S GREAT ROCK MUSIC!
The liner notes boast great photos of most of the groups on this CD and a few notes about what was making the news in 1974.
One true negative, however, is that the CD series of "Billboard Hits" by Rhino Records limits each CD to ten songs each. Exactly ten songs. Not nine, not eleven, not twelve either. I was disappointed by this. The CD only weighs in at 34 minutes so they had room for at least two more songs--and why not three more songs? This is not a complete selection. Therefore, it's either a great starter CD for people who want to get more familiar with `70s music or an inexpensive retrospective of the songs of 1974.
Nevertheless, this IS a fun CD and very entertaining. The quality of the sound is excellent--even on my PC's CD drive! I highly recommend this CD for people who remember the `70s fondly with its' distinctive great rock and roll sound.
Great Songs, Great Memories September 29, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was the year that I graduated from high school and each time that I hear one of these songs it takes me back to some great memories of that special time. To those who associate songs with particular events in their past, this one will do the job quite well. I doubt if you will be disappointed and it will be a great addition to any CD collection.

Not all of these hits are "rock and roll," as the title of this collection states. Still, all of these tracks appear in their original forms with good sound quality.
