Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the Smashing Pumpkins most complicated and prettiest album. This epic contains two discs so expect a lot of different styles of music, you get a little bit of everything, beautiful ballads with haunting melodies, the alternative rock anthems, and Corgan's quirky unique songs. How can you go wrong with songs like: Thirty-three, Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Lily (My One and Only Love), Where Boys Fear to Tread and etc. Important album of the '90s, buy this masterpiece today!

1979, Thirty-Three, and Tonight Tonight are three more of my all time favorite songs. Dam do I love this band.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the "fuzzy" guitars they use on the heavier tracks - to me, it kind of spoils the power of those tracks. At least it's original. But by hell this band can knock out a ballad like no one else. No wonder they're a flagship 90s band ... no one's making music these days like they did back then (unfortunately this includes the Pumpkins, by all accounts ...) Nonetheless, good stuff.

Mellon Collie is a beautifully written masterpiece in my opinion. Of course, I simply adore the pumpkins. I find the album itself can satisfy a vast array a different music "moods" and left me with a number of songs I could identify with at that specific time in my life. For those who say it doesn't compare to Siamese Dream: While I admit Siamese Dream was a masterpiece, I see no decline with mellon collie-just difference. It was still the beautiful pumpkins music I knew I loved (which is more than I can say now in 2008). Anyway---Beautiful Album*****
START HERE to become a Pumkins fan February 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Smashing Pumpkins just came out with a greatest hits...just like every other band a decade after they have ceased to be.
But to those new to the Smashing Pumkins I recommed they start here. This is a double disk album that features a nice mix of what the band was about. It features Radio friendly songs like 1979. Thumping Metalistic songs like Zero and Bullet with butterfly wings. And the Artistic original songs like X.Y.U and Bodies Even a couple of slow songs (well as slow as the Pumpkins get anyway) like Thirty Three and Tonight Tonight. Or maybe you will become a fan of the seriously trippy songs like Porcelina or Thru the eyes of ruby.
What every part or multipe parts you like this is the CD to get you started. If you enjoy this CD then go get (used if you can find them) Siamese Dream, Pisces iscariot, Adore and so on.
But this cd is definatly the crowning highpoint of their era.
